Kaley, a first year middle school student, was just awarded First Chair in her fourth period band class. She did not take band during her last year in elementary school, but did continue her private lessons with me during that time. Her band director noticed there was something different about the way she looked when playing, but said her “range and tone quality [were] both very good for a young player.” I would agree that Kaley’s embouchure is quite different than most young players, which is a good thing. She has been working on that position along with her other fundamentals for a couple of years now with great success, so I expect she will always stand out among her peers. Congratulations to you, Kaley…and keep up the good work, for the best is yet to come!
